Seoul Youth Declaration for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation adopted by participants of the Youth Forum on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

On 30 June 2021, the participants of the Youth Forum on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation adopted the Seoul Youth Declaration for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, containing their recommendations for Securing Our Common Future.

The recommendations were developed by participants within three Working Groups, exploring the role of young people to advance the disarmament agenda through (i) achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), (ii) approaching the opportunities and challenges posed by New and Emerging Technologies, and (iii) addressing issues related to gender and disarmament.

The recommendations were then presented and discussed with the plenary over the two days of deliberations, and subsequently adopted in the form of the ‘Seoul Youth Declaration for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation’ as a result.

The declaration, including the names of all the participants, can be shared at the First Committee of the UN General Assembly upon the proposal of a second resolution on Youth, Disarmament, and Non-proliferation by the Republic of Korea later this year.

The Youth Forum on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation was the first of its kind co-hosted by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, engaging and empowering youth in key discussions taking place in the disarmament field.

25 young people from 22 different countries were selected as participants from over 160 candidates and engaged in insightful and stimulating discussions on ways youth can participate in disarmament and non-proliferation.
