#Youth4Disarmament to host Youth Exchange with Setsuko Thurlow

As we approach the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the opportunities to hear first-hand testimony from the survivors - the Hibakusha - become fewer and fewer. With time marching on, it is imperative to engage and educate the next generation on the stories of the Hibakusha - to preserve their memories and to take on their goal of achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.

Against this background, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and its Youth4Disarmament Initiative, in collaboration with Hibakusha Stories and Youth Arts New York, will host a youth exchange with Hiroshima Survivor Setsuko Thurlow on the margins of the tenth review conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

At the side-event, Setsuko Thurlow will share her testimony with a group of young attendants and participate in a youth-led question and answer session. Taking place alongside the deliberations of the NPT, the event will aim to educate young people on nuclear disarmament and inspire their action to advance the Hibakusha’s pursuit of achieving a nuclear-weapon-free world. 

The event will take place on Thursday 4 August at 13:00-14:30pm (ET). In-person participants must be located in New York and will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis from the registration form. All participants attending in-person must return a negative anti-gen test and must wear a mask for the duration of the event. For those unable to join in-person, virtual attendance will be available via Zoom.
