Our Work

Projects

The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs supports multilateral efforts aimed at achieving the ultimate goal of general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control. Weapons of mass destruction, in particular nuclear weapons, continue to be of primary concern owing to their destructive power and the threat that they pose to humanity. The Office also works to address the humanitarian impact of major conventional weapons and emerging weapon technologies, such as autonomous weapons, as these issues have received increased attention from the international community.

As the flagship youth outreach programme of the Office for Disarmament Affairs, Youth4Disarmament invites youth representing a wide range of issues to question the role of weapons in achieving security and to understand disarmament as a practical, actionable tool that prevents and mitigates the impact of armed violence.

Explore our youth work through the projects below, grouped by how they impact our goals and priorities. The categories below highlight the importance of disarmament in our everyday lives. By addressing the issues that weapons create, we can better protect our communities, shape our future and inherit peace.

Protecting our communities

Weapons destroy lives and our environment. To protect our communities, we must confront the humanitarian and environmental impacts of these weapons and understand what disarmament looks like in local settings. Humanitarian advocacy explores the connection between disarmament/arms control and topics such as development, environment, new and emerging technologies, gender, public health, including mental health, and many more.

Shaping secure futures

Scientific innovation can give rise to new weapons. We must anticipate the risks and proactively think about security in this new technological landscape. Every day, for example, we see new developments in useful (but often also controversial) emerging civilian technology that can quickly go wrong if weaponized — such as artificial intelligence, cyber innovations, or even outer space.

 Inheriting peace

Survivors and witnesses of conflict courageously share their stories so that future generations do not repeat the past. We must explore the inter-generational aspects of disarmament and value the lessons we learn from those who came before us. Let’s listen to and learn from our past, so that the devastating history wrought by nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons doesn’t repeat itself — in our lifetime and that of our children. Nor do we want the doomsday scenarios of using these weapons of mass destruction, to become real.

Youth community projects

What can young people do to protect our communities, shape secure futures and inherit peace? To respond to this question, Youth4Disarmament community members have championed the following causes, among others:

  • Educating peers and other young people through publishing stories and guidebooks, as well as conducting workshops and information programmes
  • Engaging with local leaders through panel discussions, petitions, and social media campaigns
  • Empowering youth by advocating for conflict victims suffering from mental health and for women impacted by armed violence.
